A machine for shaping stone by grinding comprises a workholder which includes three members for supporting a workpiece having a planar surface, the members each having in use a point or line of contact with said surface, and a clamping device for preventing movement of the workpiece relative to the members. As illustrated the members are rollers 4, 5 rotatably mounted on arms 6, 7 which are adjustable along a rail 2 on a base body 1. The arms may be adjustable in length or alternatively may be replaced by arms of different lengths. The clamping device is constituted by a pair of clamping jaws 9 adjustably mounted on a shaft 10. A stop member 16 is provided if-required as is the case in embodiment of Fig. 2. In use a workpiece is clamped on the supporting rollers and the base body is moved relative to grinding wheels. In working a work piece as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 10 grinding wheels 27-30 are employed. When the workpiece is an angled step having a recessed riser the wheel 27 is replaced by a wheel having two grinding surfaces (Fig. 9, not shown).</p> |
