A surface material (1) for absorbent hygiene articles such as nappies, sanitary towels or incontinence pads, comprises a layer (2) of hydrophobic material containing a pattern of cavities (4) which are provided with holes (5) leading to the inside surface of the surface material. The outside of the hydrophobic layer is rendered hydrophilic within the cavity regions. Also claimed is a method for rendering depressions in a hygiene article surface material hydrophilic, comprising placing the material in a gastight fashion upon a carrier with the cavities forming outwards projecting profiles and then introducing an ionised gas (mixture) into the region around the carrier. |
