DATA RECORDING DEVICE AND ITS METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to store free capacity information even when a power supply for a device is interrupted and to reduce power and processing time to be consumed for maintaining the free capacity information on a medium or checking free capacity. SOLUTION: When a power supply is turned on in a data recorder capable of recording data in a detachable storage medium whether an attached device 10 can be used or not is decided, and when the device 10 can be used, free capacity data stored in an EEPROM 8 are loaded into a DRAM 7. The free capacity data of the DRAM 7 are updated in accordance with the recording or erasing of data. When the power supply is interrupted, memory residual data stored in the DRAM 7 are stored in the EEPROM 8. When the attachment/ detachment of the device 10 for recording data is detected, the memory residual data of the DRAM 7 are rewritten by the changed memory residual of the storage medium.
