PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ECL element whose manufacturing process is simple and which is hard to cause pinholes and flaws and has a good yield, a satisfactory secular stability and improved luminous efficiency. SOLUTION: An organic thin layer 3 is formed by the wet method on a surface of a positive electrode 2 formed on a substrate 1. An organic thin layer 6 is formed by the wet method on a surface of a negative electrode 5 formed on a substrate 4. The organic thin layers 3, 6 are pasted in a face-to-face relation and the circumference portion 7 is bonded or sealed fusedly. At least one of the organic thin layers 3, 6 contains a radiative material. Otherwise, at least one of the organic thin layers 3, 6 contains an electrolyte.
