PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the compatibility of high screen uniformity with polarized light conversion of high efficiency by disposing a polarized light conversion optical element in a position conjugate with the inlet portion of a transparent rod after via the transparent rod and an image forming lens system. SOLUTION: The light from the light source 1 is made incident on the transparent rod 4 by the condenser lens system 3. The light source 1 and the condenser lens system 3 are so disposed that the light is made incident on a portion in the inlet portion and position (1) of the transparent rod 4 at this time. The image forming lens system 5 is used in order to illuminate the outlet portion of the transparent rod 4, for example, a position (4), the space optical modulation element 7 by a liquid crystal panel and the polarized light conversion optical element 6 is disposed in the position (3) between the image forming lens system 5 and the space optical modulation element 7. The place, position (3), where the polarized light conversion optical element 6 is disposed, is near the conjugate position by the image forming lens system 5 of the inlet portion, position (1) of the transparent rod 4. The polarized light conversion is executed by placing the polarized light conversion optical element 6 in the position (3).
