PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can efficiently perform image processing in accordance with precision and a kind of a scanner, without performing wasteful image correction processings, alarm transmission or the like in accordance with the variance of sensitivity of each pixel of an image sensor. SOLUTION: When reflected light beams of a light irradiated with an original and a white reference are read by a contact type image sensor 19, a level value for each reading pixel is compared with a specified reference value and abnormality level is detected, abnormal pixel non-detection range is set in advance in accordance with the variance of sensitivity of each pixel of the contact type image sensor 19, the range is stored in a memory 62, and abnormal level detection processing is performed only for the pixels lying outside the range by an abnormal pixel detection circuit 54.
