PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a device constitution and to attain miniaturization by providing a rotation detection means in an outer side surface of a housing. SOLUTION: This linear motor is provided with a shaft 3 rotated in a rotor 9 formed in cylindrical shape movable in a long shaft direction, the rotor 9 is rotatably supported to a housing 15 (15a, 15b, 15c) through bearings 11, 13, a magnet 17 is provided in a peripheral surface of the rotor 9, a coil part 23 formed by winding a coil 19 to a core 21 is arranged in the internal peripheral surface of the housing 15 (15a, 15b, 15c) to be opposed to the magnet 17, and the rotor 9 is rotated by carrying a current in the coil 19, so as to advance/ retract the shaft 3. Here, an encoder 27 detecting a rotational speed of the rotor 9 is provided in an outer side surface of the housing.
