A device to operate a gas exchange valve for IC engines has an electromagnetic actuator which possesses an opening magnet and a closing magnet between whose pole faces an armature is located coaxially to the gas exchange valve. It works on the gas exchange valve. There is at least one pre-tensioned valve spring per operating device. They hold the armature with unexcited magnets in an equilibrium position between the pole faces. They work on the gas exchange valve in the operating direction via a spring support moved with the gas exchange valve. They are supported with their free ends on a second spring support. The adjusting unit (1,2) displaces the equilibrium position of the valve springs in the closing direction in the region of the opening position and in the opening direction in the region of the closed position. Thereby it introduces energy for the first-time and cyclical closing and opening of the gas exchange valve into the valve springs.
