This invention relates to an improved method for repairing damaged or worn surfaces of turbine components or upgrading older designs to new, improved designs. This improved method applies to both high pressure and low pressure turbine components applications. This method includes depositing a plurality of individual spaced apart weld volumes (11, 13, 15, 17) onto a prepared surface (3) of a turbine rotor (5). These individual spaced apart weld volum es (11, 13, 15, 17) form individual fingers (12, 14, 16, 18) without the need t o machine the individual fingers (12, 14, 16, 18) from a single rectangular we ld volume. Multiple weld volumes (11, 13, 15, 17) are formed concurrently with a space (19) maintain between each weld volume (11, 13, 15, 17) using multiple torches (21, 23) without the problems normally associated with closely space d welding arcs. Each individual spaced apart weld volume (11, 13, 15, 17) is formed by a plurality of layers (29) of weld metal (27), with each layer (29 ) being formed from a single oscillating weld bead (28) to form a predetermine d width (W). The filler wire weld metal (27) may be heated by applying a curre nt (25) through the filler wire (27) before it is fed into the weld pool. Weldi ng parameters are also changed to increase the amount of weld deposition withou t adversely affecting the mechanical weld properties. The invention provides f or reduced cycle time for repair work by using multiple torches (21, 23) simultaneously without causing arc instability. The invention also reduces cycle time, by eliminating the need of machining individual fingers on contr ol stages from a single weld volume, by changing the weld buildup of multiple projections (11, 13, 15, 17), slightly larger than the fingers (12, 14, 16, 18) which hold the blades.
