A laundry detergent bar contains a synthetic anionic detergent and a proportion of watersoluble builder salt in excess of the amount of anionic detergent, the bar having a density in the range 1.1 to 1.4 and having microscopic gas pockets. Suitable detergents are alkyl or alkyl aryl sulphonates, fatty acid isothionates, taurates, glyceryl ether sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, alkyl ethylenoxy sulphates, sulphuric acid esters of polyhydric alcohols incompletely esterified with higher fatty acids and sulphated alkyl phenol ethylene oxides. These detergents are preferably present in the form of their alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts and will usually comprise 10-40% of the finished bar. Specified builders are alkali metal phosphates, silicates, carbonates, bicarbonates, borates, sulphates and chlorides. It is preferred to use a mixture of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium or potassium bicarbonate or sesquicarbonate, the mixture being present as 45-65% of the finished bar. Optional additives include up to 5% of fatty acid alkylalamides and ethylene oxide adducts thereof, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, carboxy methylcellulose, melamine, fluorescent brightening agents, perfumes, colouring agents, germicides, bactericides, other detergents, glycerine, lanolin, starches, zinc oxide and finely divided cellulose and waxes.
