An automotive heat shield is formed of a sandwich consisting of two sheet metal panels (2, 3) separated by an insulating material (4). The graphite insulation material (4) esp. 'Vermiculit' is deposited in powder form on one of the panels (2). The second panel (3) is then positioned over the first (2). The edges (5) of the first panel (2) are then rolled over and bonded to the other (3). The insulation material is compressed into a coherent structure either before or after application of the sheet metal parts.
