To coat a paper web with a cladding or an adhesive over controlled lengths, an operating mechanism has a jet fixed to it so that it moves against the spreader to adjust the application length between the spreader section and the jet. A carrier lever for the support roller is part of the operating mechanism, so that the jet can rotate round the shaft of the support roller. The operating link bears against the lever to cause the jet to rotate in a circle against the support roller, using a hydraulic cylinder unit for the operation. The gap between the web and the upper lip of the jet on the operating mechanism is set by one adjustment unit, and a further adjustment controls the gap between the web and the lower lip to give the best cladding action, using a setting screw for the first adjustment and the hydraulic cylinder for the second setting control. The assembly for the lower lip pivots on the lever with a swing support for the upper lip assembly.
