The invention relates to a windshield wiper device, especially for cleaning the windshield of a vehicle. The device comprises at least one windshield wiper, which can be displaced between two terminal positions and is driven by an electric drive motor, and control means, which process the current windshield wiper position and switch signals of a manually operated switching device in the form of input values and a supply voltage of the electric drive motor in the form of an output value, thereby controlling the speed of the wiper. The at least one wiper is operated at a first speed in a first switch position of the switching device and at a second speed in a second switch position of the switching device. The at least one wiper is operated at the first speed in the second switch position as it approaches an upper or lower terminal position. The electric drive motor (2) comprises a system of contact disks (20) which rotates in synchrony with the motor speed for periodically switching between the second (II) and first (I) speed.
