The longitudinal scale (9) is projected on an object (4,5). The length of the object (4,5) on the projected scale is determined. The projection ancillary is replaced by a camera to photograph the object (4,5). Using the photograph and the object length on the longitudinal scale (9) of the measurement gobo (3), the shadow mask (7) in similar fashion. The shadow mask (7) has a light permeable contour (8) within its contour limiting curve of the object (4,5), but otherwise is not permeable. The determined length is equal to, or at most 5 per cent larger than, the corresponding length of the object contour (8) on the gobo or the shadow mask (7). Independent claims are included for a device for illuminating an object, and for a system of illuminating multiple objects.
