A data carrier device (6; 59) for outputting data (SI; KI) stored in the data carrier device (6; 59) to at least one data reading device (1, 2, 3; 62) is provided with data storage means (28) for storing data (SI; KI) and fail count storage means (33) for storing a fail count (FVZ), password information storage means (32) for storing at least one password information item (GPWI, GPWI(BKI)), and test means (27; 66) for testing whether password information (PWI, PWI(BKI)) output to the data carrier device (6; 59) by a data reading device (1, 2, 3; 62) matches password information (GPWI, GPWI(BKI)) stored in the password information storage means (32), and for changing a fail count (FVZ), stored in the fail count storage means (33), in dependence on the test result. The data carrier device (6; 59) can output data (SI; KI) stored in the data storage means (28) to at least one data reading device (1, 2, 3; 62) if, in case the tested password information (PWI, PWI(BKI), GPWI, GPWI(BKI)) matches, the fail count (FVZ) stored in the fail count storage means (33) equals an access value. There is provided a random number generator (34) for selecting a random number (ZZ) from a random number range (ZB1, ZB2), and the test means (27; 66) being arranged to fix, in case the tested password information (PWI, PWI(BKI), GPWI, GPWI(BKI)) does not match, a selected random number (ZZ) as the fail count (FVZ).
