PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily and efficiently obtainα-type titanium phosphate by heating a mixture of titanium oxide and aqueous phosphoric acid in a tightly sealed vessel at a specific temperature. SOLUTION: The heating temperature ranges from 100 deg.C to 200 deg.C. The titanium oxide to used here is selected from the anatase, rutile and other types, but the anatase type is preferable. The aqueous phosphoric acid is prepared by dissolving phosphoric acid in water and a commercially available 85% phosphoric acid or its diluted product with water can be used here. The concentration of the phosphoric acid is particularly limited, but the molar ratio of Ti/P is preferably 1/100-1/10 based on the titanium oxide to be admixed. Titanium oxide is mixed to aqueous phosphoric acid and the mixture is placed in a pressure vessel and heated at 100 deg.C to 200 deg.C under tightly sealed conditions for 4-10 hours to give the objective titanium phosphate.
