PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phenol resin compsn. having improved electrical insulating properties without detriment to the heat resistance, mechanical properties, and water resistance inherent to a phenol resin by incorporating the backbone of a specific polycyclic compd. into the polymer molecular chain of a phenol resin. SOLUTION: This compsn. has the backbone of a polycyclic compd. of formula I in its polymer molecular chain. In the formula, each R in benzene rings A and B is a 1-8C linear or branched alkyl, hydroxyl, or aryl; each (m) is independently an integer of 0-2; and 0<=n<=3. The polycyclic compd. of formula I is obtd. by reacting a phenol with a cyclic compd. of formula II (wherein 0<=n<=3) which is hydrophobic and has two hydroxyl groups and a 5- to 8-membered ring. The compsn. is prepd. by reacting the polycyclic compd. of formula I, a phenol, and formaldehyde under acidic conditions and contains about 3-50 pts.wt. compd. of formula I based on the total phenols contained.
