PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a postal abject sorter and postal item sorting method capable of surely sorting a large quantity of postal items. SOLUTION: A sorting section 10 by numbers sorts the postal objects 1 by postal code numbers to sorting sections 14, 15 by number of pieces in accordance with the number switching information outputted by an ID collation system 6. A counter 13 for number of pieces counts the number of pieces of the postal objects 1 transported toward the sorting sections 14, 15 by number of pieces and output constant number information to the sorting sections 14, 15 by number of pieces when the count value attains a set value. The sorting sections 14, 15 by number of pieces sort the postal objects 1 by every prescribed number of pieces to integrating sections 14a, 14b, 15a, 15b in accordance with the constant number information outputted by the counter 13 for number of pieces. The sorting sections 14, 15 by number of pieces sort the groups consisting of the postal objects 1 below the regulated number of pieces to these integrating sections 14a, 14b, 15a, 15b by every prescribed number of pieces.
