PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple earth retaining method suitable for opening a narrow ditch. SOLUTION: A sheet pile is prevented from being fallen by locking a locking jig to each locking hole in two sheet piles with interval of at least one sheet pile depth and in two sheet piles opposite thereto out of the sheet piles arranged continuously along both wall surfaces of a dug ditch, and expanding a strut member between the locking jigs opposite to each other using a long sheet pile 20 in which a locking hole 21 is formed in a specified position in the longitudinal direction, a locking jig 30 to be locked to the locking hole, and the expandable strut member with both ends abutted on the locking jig. The continuously arranged sheet piles are prevented from being fallen by locking both ends of a support member 50 comprising a metallic plate, a chain or a wire to two locking jigs in the direction of continuous arrangement.
