A lubricating device for bearings &c. comprises a multi-layer assembly of non-absorbent heat-conducting durable material of discontinuous construction with grease packed around and between the layers of the material and in the interstices of the construction thereof, said grease being capable of releasing lubricating fluid upon a rise in temperature of the bearing &c. The material may be metal in the form of a mesh, which may be provided with a selvedge; may be coiled; and may form a central reservoir for the grease. In an embodiment, a cartridge comprising a grease-filled coil of non-absorbent heat-conducting material is clamped within a deflectable gear 18 of an actuator 12 by means of a plate 32 and a screw 36, the latter screwing into a shaft 26 and having a tubular spacer 34 thereon. The actuator 12, which is of the harmonic drive type, comprises a rigid circular spline 14, having internal teeth 16; the deflectable gear 18, having a lesser number of external teeth 20 arranged to mesh with the teeth 16 of the spline 4 at spaced circumferential localities; and a wave generator 22 which, with its bearing 24, generates a continuous wave of radial deflections in the gear 18 and hence effects tooth interengagement to produce a rotary output in one of two shafts 26, 28, the other of which serves as an input member. When the bearing 24 becomes heated, the heat is transmitted to the cartridge and is therefore conducted to the grease 44 within said cartridge. Oil is released from the grease and is conveyed to the bearing 24. The cartridge may be periodically replaced or repacked with grease. |
