A moisture vapour permeable, liquid vapour impermeable sheet material comprises a fibrous substrate and a moisture vapour permeable thermoplastic film layer. The fibrous substrate comprises synthetic fibres comprising at least 50 wt.% of polyolefin polymer and having opposite first and second planar sides and the thermoplastic film layer is melt bonded directly to the first side of the substrate. Also claimed are (1) preparation of the composite sheet material; (2) a breathable composite sheet material; (3) manufacture of a breathable composite sheet material; and (4) absorbent articles.
