PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic level capable of assuring high automation in measurement while having a low manufacturing cost by saving optical parts and mechanical parts, and capable of correcting large inclination for a vertical shaft, and to provide a method for a stadia rod image collimation. SOLUTION: An image recorder has a CCD receiver matrix 5 operated mainly by a video cycle, an objective lens 4 or the CCD receiver matrix 5 is arranged in a fixed position with respect to a vertical axis (STA), the lens 4 and the matrix 5 are moved each other relatively to allow distance adjustment between them, and an inclinometer 10 is arranged in a fixed position for measuring deviation from a horizontal line of a collimation axis (ZA) formed as a central picture element (MP) for the objective lens 4 and the CCD receiver matrix 5.
