PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-resistive(MR) thin-film magnetic head which is capable of improving reproduction output and embodying a higher recording density and is capable of easily embodying the formation of the free layers of SV-GMR(spin valve type giant magneto-resistive effect) element to single domains and a method for controlling the magnetic domains of a magneto- resistive(MR) thin-film magnetic head capable of automatically executing the formation of the free layers of the SV-GMR elements to the single domains. SOLUTION: The plural SV-GMR elements 31, 32 are disposed in the track width direction in the yoke gap portion of the magnetic field induction yoke of the MR thin-film magnetic head. The SV-GMR elements 31, 32 are connected in series and is set with a sense current direction and a signal magnetic field direction in parallel. Soft magnetic layers 3F (or hard magnetic layers) for forming the free layers 3A to the single domains at the same plane shape are disposed in the lower parts of the plural SV-GMR elements 3. The formation of the free layers 3A to the single domains is executed by the sense current to be passed to the SV-GMR elements 3.
