A transcription system is provided which includes a plurality of signal receivers 12A,12B for positioning adjacent a writing surface (28, Fig.1) and for receiving a position signal transmitted from a stylus (10) when the stylus is positioned adjacent the writing surface, the signal receivers producing timing signals in response to receiving the position signal from the stylus, the transcription system using the timing signals to determine a position of the stylus adjacent the writing surface. The receiver are coupled by a coupling member 146,148 formed of two parts connected by a hinge 150 to enable the assembly to adopt two configuration in which the receivers are different distances apart. The coupling member may be in three parts connected by two hinges (Fig. 7I). Alternatively, the parts of the coupling member may be telescopically connected (Fig. 7J). The assembly may include electronics, control switches 182, an indicator 184 and suction cups (136, Fig. 7I) for mounting the assembly on a writing surface.
