An upholstered assembly comprising an open cell polyurethane foam layer located between a sheet and a flexible cover is prepared by including a bond promoting agent in the foam layer, applying heat and pressure in selected areas so that the cells in these areas collapse and the cover is bonded to the sheet in these areas. The bond promoting agent may be an adhesive applied to the surfaces of the polyurethane foam or used as an impregnant for it, or may be a material e.g. polyvinyl chloride or phenolformaldehyde resin which will fuse to the sheet and cover under the heating conditions (preferably dielectric heating). The backing sheet may be hardboard, suitably coated with polyvinyl chloride, or cloth or polyvinyl chloride. The flexible cover is suitably polyvinyl chloride. |
