PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of printing on an envelope having different thicknesses in a pasting part and the other part. SOLUTION: An envelope printing section 31 that executes an envelope printing mode capable of setting different gaps G1, G2 corresponding to a pasting part 61 and the other part 62 is provided to a printer 1 that can control the gap G between a print head 13 and a platen 12. The envelope printing mode can be set by virtue of a control commandϕ2 which is transmitted from a host computer 50 together with printing dataϕ1. As a result, the envelope printing mode is set at the printing on the envelope even when a specific mechanism for judging the paper is not provided to the printer 1, thereby performing high quality printing.
