PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain new aromatic diisocyanates which are useful as raw materials, for example, for polyurethane, polyurea, and polycarbodiimide. SOLUTION: These compound are 4,4'-bis(isocyanatephenoxy)biphenyl shown by formula I and 4,4'-bis(3-isocyanatephenoxy)biphenyl shown by formula II. The compound shown by formula I is obtained by reacting 4,4'-bis(aminophenoxy)biphenyl shown by formula III with phosgene in the presence of an inert solvent (e.g. chlorobenzene), wherein it is preferable that an equivalent ratio of phosgene per amino group of the compound shown by formula III is always 1 or larger, and that phosgene is dropwisely added to a solution of the above-mentioned compound of shown by formula I in an inert solvent at 20-150 deg.C, and then the reaction mixture is heated at 70-200 deg.C until generation of chlorine gas ceases.
