PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit stable running of a head and to enhance S-N ratio in high density recording by specifying a range of the center line average roughness of the surface of a magnetic record medium measured in a direction perpendicular to the peripheral direction. SOLUTION: The center line average roughness is adjusted in the range of 0.3-3 nm. An underlayer comprising Cr, Mo, W or an alloy based on these is formed on a substrate and crystals are grown under orientation so that the (100) or (110) crystal lattice faces of the underlayer are made parallel to the substrate. A magnetic layer preferably comprises Co, Fe, Ni or an alloy based on these and good characteristics are ensured when the magnetic layer is based on an alloy such as Co-Ni, Co-Cr, Co-Fe, Co-Mo, Co-W, Co-Pt or Co-Re. It is preferable that crystals are grown under orientation so that the (110) crystal lattice faces of the magnetic layer are made almost parallel to the substrate because magnetic anisotropy is enhanced by the growth.
