PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To concentrate the reflected light to the observer's side and to obtain an easily visible display with a large angle of view by controlling the pitch and height of irregularities randomly formed on a substrate facing the liquid crystal layer to specified values or smaller. SOLUTION: The irregularities are formed on the substrate 3 facing the liquid crystal layer, and a thin metal film is formed as a reflection layer on the rough surface so that the irregularities of the substrate also appear on the metal film surface. The rough surface acts as a light-scattering plane to scatter and reflect the light entering through the observation side. In this method, the irregularities are preferably controlled to give more reflected light to the observer's side, and the rugged pattern is formed with inhomogeneous and random pitches. The average pitch p is preferably controlled to <=80 μm, and more preferably <=10 μm. The height h of the irregularities are preferably controlled to <=0.6 μm, and more preferably <=0.3 μm considering the alignment stability of the liquid crystal to be held and the concentration of the reflected light to the observer's side. |
