A small-sized lightweight optical module. An end (18) of a mounting substrate (10) is a mirror reflecting light at an angle of 90 DEG . A surface-emitting laser (22) is so disposed that the light output portion (28) faces the end (18). The mounting substrate (10) has a core (12) and a clad (14) inside the substrate (10) along the surface of the substrate (10), thereby serving as an optical waveguide. Thus, the optical module is thin, small in size, and lightweight.
