A method for diagnosing a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or inflammatory disease is new and comprises: (a) contacting a biological sample with an antibody specific for a sarcolectin (SCL) protein or oligopeptide, or a fragment of such an antibody; (b) detecting any SCL-antibody complex formation; and (c) comparing the results with those obtained for a control sample from a seronegative patient. An Independent claim is also included for a kit for performing a diagnostic test for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), comprising: at least one antibody or antibody fragment monospecific for an SCL protein or oligopeptide, reagents, especially labels or buffers, for detecting the relevant immunological reaction; and directions for use. |
