PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an indentation detecting apparatus which is compact and by which inspection data on individual gears to be inspected can be obtained. SOLUTION: In an indentation detecting apparatus, a master gear 33 is engaged with a gear 9, to be inspected, so as to be turned, and an indentation on the gear 9 to be inspected is detected on the basis of the change amount of the distance between shafts of both gears. In the apparatus, at the inside of a box 2, a work cleaning machine 17 which sprays a cleaning fluid to the gear 9, to be inspected, from a nozzle 14 so as to be cleaned is provided, a work transfer machine 18 which transfers the cleaned gear 9, to be inspected, to a work support base 24 at an indentation inspection machine 19 from the work cleaning machine 17 is provided, and an engagement mechanism 39 by which the master gear 33 is engaged with the gear 9, to be inspected, supported by the work support base 24 is provided. The work cleaning machine 17 is provided with a cover 12 which covers the gear 9, to be inspected, and the nozzle 14 during a cleaning operation and which prevents the cleaning fluid and a foreign body from being scattered to the master gear 33 and the work support base 24.
