PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface type light emitting device arranged to reduce cost by integrating a surface light emitting element and a photodetector in simple form thereby enhancing productivity without sacrifice of output power of the light emitting element. SOLUTION: The surface type light emitting device comprises a surface light emitting element and a photodetector. The surface light emitting element is a surface type light emitting element emitting light from the surface of a first substrate 21 perpendicularly thereto. A part of an electrode for injecting a current into the light emitting element is constituted by jointing an electrode pad 6 provided on the first substrate 21 by leading out to a part of the light emitting element other than the functional part 8 with an electrode pad 13 on a wiring pattern formed on a second substrate 22 different from the first substrate 21 such that both pads are conducted electrically. A current can be injected into the functional part 8 of the light emitting element from the second substrate 22 side and the photodetector is formed on the second substrate 22.
