PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve the reliability of cell reception in a receiver for asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) network for transmitting information in the cell unit of a fixed length provided with a start-of-cell(SOC) signal showing the leading position. SOLUTION: This receiver is provided with an SOC detecting means 3 for detecting the SOC signal, two reception means 1 and 2 respectively equipped with a buffer for storing data for one cell and a counter for counting reception time for one cell when the SOC signal is detected by the SOC detecting means 1, and a control means 6 for switching the effective buffer based on the effective data of the buffer of either one of reception means, the detection timing of the SOC signal by the SOC detecting means 3 and the counter value of the reception means 1 or 2 equipped with the effective buffer.
