PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to execute proper white balance adjustment in either case of interlaced scanning and progressive scanning to be switched by detecting a white balance state in each n times a vertical period at the time of interlaced scanning and in each 2n times the vertical period at the time of progressive scanning. SOLUTION: Digital red(R), green(G) and blue(B) signals from a primary color separation matrix processing circuit 6 are supplied to a white balance amplifier circuit 7 and a white balance processing detection circuit 8. A detection output from the circuit 8 is supplied for a camera microcomputer 16 which adjusts the gain of digital R and B signal amplifiers against the gain of a digital G signal amplifier in the circuit 7 based on the detection output to execute automatic adjustment for white balance. The circuit 8 is provided with luminance-sorted integration means.
