PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shaft excavating apparatus which can move in a shaft under its own power and can excavate shafts being different in dimensions or having sections in arbitrary shapes. SOLUTION: A shaft excavating apparatus having a constitution wherein the base end parts of a plurality of articulated arms 4 are fitted to the main body 1 so that the arms are swingable in the direction of a horizontal plane, and a support leg 22 and a side shoe 23 are fitted to the fore end part of each of these articulated arms 4, while an excavator 40 is fitted to the main body 1. According to this shaft excavating apparatus, the main body 1 moves under its own power by bringing some support legs 22 into contact with the ground, while making the residual support legs 22 suspended therefrom, and by swinging the articulated arms 4 of the support legs 22 being in contact with the ground, and therefore shafts being different in dimensions or having sections in arbitrary shapes can be excavated.
