PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact document feeding device capable of suppressing an error infeeding and a picture image reader using the same. SOLUTION: This document feeding device is provided with a hopper table 1 on which a document 2 is put, a supply roller feeding the document 2 put on the hopper table 1, and a lifting means which lifts the hopper table 1 and positions a document at an uppermost step among the documents put on the hopper table 1 at a level of a feeding means. While the hopper table 1 is between a lower limit position and a change-over position set above more than the lower limit position, the hopper table 1 is swung. While the hopper table 1 is between the change-over position and an upper limit position set above more than the change-over position, the hopper table 1 is moved horizontally, and a height and an angle of this supply roller follow the operation of the hopper table continuously to prevent jamming.
