A railway system comprises a train of loadcarrying modules 10 interconnected and driven by drive-units 12 having a pair of motor-driven traction wheels 14 running on rails 16 and guided by guide wheels 22 located fore and aft of each wheel 14 and running on the side of rail 16. Each traction wheel 14 is rotatably supported on a hollow shaft 110 through which projects a drive shaft 84 coupled to the wheel by an end drive fitting 90 and driven by the drive shaft 56 of an electric motor via a high-speed gear train including pinions 68, 74 and a pinion 82 fixed to the shaft 84. The shaft 110 also rotatably supports an idler wheel 106 which, when the train enters a gradient (or section where lower speed is required), runs on an idler rail 108 to lift -the traction wheel 14 of the rail 16 and cause a pinion 64, driven by the drive shaft 56, through a low-speed gear train including pinions 68, 74, 94 and a pinion 96 mounted on a shaft 100 coaxial with shaft 56 and supporting the pinion 64, to mesh with a rack 66 secured to the underside of rail 16. The pinion receives power from the shaft 100 via a freewheeling clutch 104, such that the pinion 64 can rotate faster than the lowspeed gear train. The drive unit may also have a second pinion (150) (Fig. 6, not shown) directly mounted on the shaft 100 to engage a second rack (152) situated at a point further along the track than the first rack such that it is engaged only when the train has been slowed down and is being driven by the pinion 64, to prevent the train from running away downhill. The drive unit may also have a motor-driven cooling fan 116 which draws air into the casing of the motor 64 via ports 122, which air is then exhausted via an exhaust 124 and directed on to a brake disc 120. The drive unit is pin-connected to one adjacent module and connected via a universal joint to the other adjacent module. The system may include sidings positioned vertically from the main track and connected thereto by a pivoting ramp. Further idler wheels may run on the underside of rails 16 such that the train may be run upside down to effect unloading.</p>
