PURPOSE: A process for preparing water soluble chitosan derivatives by introducing cationic substituent to chitosan is provided which makes easy to produce an industrial production because of its high substitution degree and easy recovery of reaction product. CONSTITUTION: Chitosan is dispersed in mixed liquid of organic solvent and water and reacted with an ether reagent of glycidyl trialkyl ammonium salt and glycidyl aryl salt or an ether reagent of 3-chloro-2-hydroxy propyl trialkyl ammonium salt, 3-chloro-2-hydroxy propyl aryl ammonium salt, 3-chloro propyl trialkyl ammonium salt, and 3-chloro propyl aryl ammonium salt to give title compound(1). In formula X = Cl, Br, I, SO2, SO3H, NO3, PO4, CH3COOH; Z = Cl, Br and I; R1,R2,R3 = alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyaryl alkoxyalkyl, and alkoxyaryl. The product can be used for cosmetics, an agriculture, a fiber processing agent, an ion exchanger, an antistatic agent, a coagulant, an adhesive, and ink.
