A device for controlling a restraining device that can be operated in a vehicle has the following: a collision sensor to detect a vehicle collision; control devices which respond to the collision sensor in order to provide an operating signal for the restraining device; determination devices for a speed value of the collision; determination devices for a displacement value of the collision; and devices to prevent the operating signal from operating the restraining device when the collision speed and displacement values exceed thresholds assigned to them. The collision sensor is an acceleration meter which provides a signal with a characteristic that displays the collision acceleration.
