The invention relates to a light modulator (1) comprising a photochromic layer (15) which can be optically activated by a control light and which is provided for modulating signal light. The inventive light modulator (1) also comprises at least one optically transparent substrate (13) for the photochromic layer (15), and has at least one filter layer (14) which reflects the control light in a wavelength-selective manner. The filter layer is provided in order to reflect back control light which has penetrated the photochromic layer (15). The reflective filter layer (14) provides that the control light is efficiently utilized for the photochemical conversion (photoconversion) of the photochromic materials, as the control light passes through the photochromic layer (15) twice. In addition, the reflective filter layer (14) carries out the function of separating the control light from the modulated signal light so that the modulated signal light can be evaluated without a significant interference caused by the control light.
