PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a photographing time by decreasing the number of pixels obtained from a CCD image pickup element. SOLUTION: A light from an object 1 is made incident onto a lens block 3 via a mirror block 2. The lens block 3 is set to a wide angle and driven by a focus servo 4. A light from the object 1 made incident onto the lens block 3 is fed to a CCD image pickup element 5. The CCD image pickup element 5 stores the incident light from the object 1 as charges and receives pixels in the middle having an area of 1/n, then the image pickup element can receive an image in a time of 1/n. The received image of the object 1 is digitized and stored once in an image memory 8 via a compression circuit 7 as a digital photographing signal. The image signal stored in the image memory 8 is given to the compression circuit 7, where the signal receives sequential compression processing. The compressed image signal is stored in a record medium 10.
