PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent displacement, vibration, and the like of a document being passed through an image reading position. SOLUTION: A cylindrical reading drum 7 for carrying the document 2 while sucking the document 2 to its peripheral face with air is provided further upstream in a document carrying direction than the image reading position 21 where a scanner 21 exists. An inverting drum 13 formed cylindrically is also provided for sucking the document 2, carried by the reading drum 7, to the peripheral face of the drum 13 from the leading end of the document with air, thereby taking over the carrying of it. Because when the images of the document 2 are read, the images are read by a scanner 21 with the document 2 sucked to the peripheral face of the reading drum 7 or the peripheral faces of both the reading drum 7 and inverting drum 13 with air, vibration, displacement, and the like of the document due to shock do not occur during the reading of the images.
