PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent interruption of a channel from being induced by avoiding production of an alarm to a busy ATM terminal during a self-healing period on the occurrence of a fault in the communication channel so as to indicate a fault restoration period succeedingly. SOLUTION: In the ATM communication system that conducts self-healing to restore autonomously a fault 21 occurred in a communication channel, the system inserts a cell 51 denoting a channel restoration period during the self- healing. Then the cell 51 is used to inform ATM terminals TE1, TE3 during communication of the line restoration period so as to suppress production of an alarm denoting the occurrence of the fault.
