PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent gas such as oxygen or hydrogen from remaining in forming a battery jar in a sealed lead-acid battery having paste type electrode plates and a retainer on the inside of the battery jar. SOLUTION: When the maximum value of the pore diameter of a retainer is represented by D (m), the surface tension of an electrolyte byγ(N/m), the contact angle of the electrolyte to the retainer material byθ(θ≈0), the modulus of elasticity of the retainer by k (kPa/mm2), and the height difference between recessed and projecting parts on the surface of a paste type electrode plate byΔh (mm), the pressing force of an electrode plate group formed by stacking a positive plate and a negative plate through the retainer is made larger than either value of the following formulas. (I) 4γ.cosθ/D, (II) k.Δh.t/2, (III) 4γ.cosθ/D +k.Δh.t/2.
