PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the position adjustment of the image pickup element of an image pickup unit and to secure compatibility. SOLUTION: In a CCD unit 503 where a substrate 502 to which a first CCD plate 500, a second CCD plate 501 and a line CCD 116 are attached is assembled to a CCD base 200, the second CCD plate 501 is relatively movably attached to the first CCD plate 500. A CCD base positioning pin is fixed to the mounting base of this image reader and the CCD base 200, that is the line CCD 116, is positioned in a horizontal direction to the mounting base by inserting the CCD base positioning pin to the pin hole 506 of the CCD base 200. Since the position of the CCD 116 is adjusted by a CCD unit adjustment jig 600 on the outside of the device, the position adjustment is simplified. Also, since the position of the line CCD 116 is adjusted for the respective CCD units by using the jig, the compatibility of the CCD unit 503 is secured.
