摘要	Mill scale is removed from strip steel (2) by passing the strip (2) into a chamber (7) containing a surface heater such as an induction coil, and contacting the mill scale within the chamber (7) with countercurrently passed reducing gas such as hydrogen. More than a stoichiometric amount of hydrogen is used; the exiting gas is chilled to remove water and the unused reducing gas is recycled.
