PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for determining whether a radio station operates in a prescribed geographical area is provided to economize the processing resources by utilizing a delay of pilot signals from base stations. CONSTITUTION: During an initializing process, a mobile radio terminal measures the delay of pilot signals from a near base station(110, 120, 130, 140) and stores it in a non-volatile memory of a radio station(102). Sequentially, during a checking process, the radio station measures the delay of pilot signals from other base station and compares it with the delay stored in the memory. If the difference between two delay values is within a predetermined permissible error, the radio station is determined to operate in a prescribed geographical area(104). A plurality of delay values can be stored in the memory so as to determine whether the radio station operates in any one location among the a plurality of prescribed geographical areas. Accordingly, processing resources are economized because the substantial geographical location of the radio station is not determined.
