PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an operator to easily understand and operate an electric wheelchair and make the wheelchair light and foldable by equipping electric motors to drive rear wheels independently and batteries and an operating means for the drive motors by gripping and twisting onto one of a pair of armrests. SOLUTION: A frame 5 to constitute the main body of this electric wheelchair is formed foldable at the central part. Drive motors 10 to independently drive rear wheels 2 and batteries 11 to supply electric power the drive motors 10 are mounted on the frame 5. The drive motors are equipped on right and left sides. The batteries 11 are constituted of nickel cadmium cells or lithium ion secondary cells. An operating means 12 is equipped on either one of a pair of armrests 4. the operating means is constituted or a grip switch to operate and stop by gripping and releasing and a twisting switch to stop a motor on a corresponding side by twisting direction of the body. Thus operation of the wheelchair is made easier.
