PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a light emitting element having good beam characteristics usable for an optical disk or the like, by providing a first wavefront converter for converting a light emitting shape into a smaller light emitting shape than its wavelength to emit an output beam. SOLUTION: The light emitting element 100 is a so-called 'edge emitting type semiconductor laser'. The element 10 comprises a wavefront converter 150 provided at its one end face so that an evanescent wave can be outputted from its pinhole (h). The element 10 also comprises a highly reflecting film 160 having a high light reflectivity at the other end face. The laser beam can be converged to a size of the same degree as a diameter of the pinhole (h) by using the evanescent wave without necessity of a lens. Accordingly, when the pinhole (h) is disposed near an optical disk, a smaller infinitesimal pit (a protrusion and recess form formed on the disk) than a wavelength of the beam can be detected or formed, and a super-high density optical disk system can be realized. |
